#23: Racing on Hula Girl

November 11, 2015anniedike

Lost Bay Regatta 2015!  Watch as we get heeled over with quite a few “puffs” crewing aboard s/v Hula Girl and get challenged to a true hula hoop throw-down.  Enjoy!

Thanks to my Patrons who help me share the journey.  Get inspired.  Get on board.

Come along and ride on a fantastic voyage! 🎶 400 nautical miles over 60 hours. Phillip and I deployed the check stay, the preventer, AND the whisker pole, which made jibing a bit of a circus act, but it was totally worth it to keep the canvas full and the boat moving beautifully on this downwind run. 6.6 average SOG. But, going fast doesn’t mean a wet bash. Ubi quick but smooth! ⛵️💨While this trip (Charleston, SC around Cape Hatteras to Hampton, VA in May) was relatively short for me and Phillip, it was our longest yet on UbiQ and it told us one very important thing: this boat was built to sail offshore. Comfortably. We cannot wait to lay down some more bluewater miles on this beauty after hurricane season. For the summer, we’re exploring all over New England and the Long Island Sound. Just beautiful up here. Much to share! #havewindwilltravel #cruisers #sailing #offshore #outbound46
I had no idea what awaited me ashore. The might and gumption of the woman who assembled this kingdom. The sprawling breadth of the estate Lucy Carnegie erected. The crumbling structures laying testament to the elegance that once was. The wild, tangled beauty she spent a lifetime preserving. Simply put, the Dungeness remains on Cumberland Island, GA are stirring and breathtaking. We visited there in November, 2021. This was number one among our top three favorite anchorages during our cruise down the U.S. east coast this past season, which we are currently sharing on the HaveWind blog. Cumberland Island is fresh up on the blog today. Check it out! And enjoy!
Some people make hay. Others make bank. We make water! 💦The Cruiser's RO system on our Outbound has proven quite the luxury, and not near as much of a power suck or attention fiend as I'd first feared. While Phillip and I are (probably too) cautious about where we make water (i.e., whether we believe the water we are floating in is "clean" enough to be converted to drinking water), when we don't have a need to make water (which is often as our boat carries its own 200 gallons), the fresh water flush required to maintain the membranes is as easy as the flip of a switch and only requires a couple dozen spurts of the water pressure pump. I either let the flush water drain to the bilge (so I can give it a good scrub) or we bag it to save for deck rinsing and other boat cleaning. Quite simple, actually. Even on this newer, more complicated boat, our goal remains to K.I.S.S. 😘 Keep It Simple Sailor!
I don’t know how or why but Phillip can pull off any hat! Had fun role-playing at the Steampunk Trunk in St. Aug. #havewindwilltravel
Found a secret kite spot in South Beach, Miami. Little tight launching but some super talent here. And great wind and big waves 🌊 in the Atlantic! 🏄‍♀️ #havewindwilltravel #southbeach
This cruising season proved very different for Phillip and me. For our first nine years cruising, when we headed out for offshore voyages, Phillip and I, aboard Plaintiff’s Rest, used to cruise the west coast of Florida and cross the Gulf of Mexico down to the Keys. This year, however, we started our cruising season very far from home—in Annapolis, MD—and cruised, for the first time, down the east coast of the U.S. What did we learn along the way? Check out our top three lessons learned along the way on the HaveWind blog today! Our First Time Cruising Down the East Coast (NC to FL): Top 3 Lessons Learned. #havewindwilltravel
